Join Buster and Lass on the maiden voyage of the S.S. Bug where you’ll meet a kaleidoscope of undersea creatures. Bugville Jr. builds on the success of the Bugville Critters books while keeping with the unique educational outlook of helping children discover the world around them while combining facts about our natural world with fictional stories that instruct and entertain. The Bugville Critters stories originally were written by Robert Stanek as bedtime stories for his own children. His children enjoyed the stories so much they urged him to make the stories available to other children and that´s what he set out to do in 2004. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Jason McCoy. In 1879, three siblings - Virgil, Marcus, and Liberty Lander - are homesteading 160 acres in Nicodemus, an all-Black community in northwestern Kansas. Not prairie fires, cyclones, droughts, winter blizzards, loneliness, snakes, bugs, or harassment of a neighbor discourage them as they anticipate the time when their sharecropper parents from Kentucky can join them. In their crude sod house surrounded by miles of virgin prairie, they experience the responsibilities and the successes of real freedom as they develop their potentials and pursue their dreams. 1. At the age of 47, when he was a successful publishing executive and living with his wife and four children in an affluent Chicago suburb, John Shafer made the surprise announcement that he had purchased a vineyard in the Napa Valley. In 1973, he moved his family to California and, with no knowledge of winemaking, began the journey that would lead him, 30 years later, to own and operate what distinguished wine critic Robert M. Parker, Jr. called ´´one of the world’s greatest wineries´´. This book, narrated by Shafer’s son Doug, is a personal account of how his father turned his midlife dream into a remarkable success story. Set against the backdrop of Napa Valley’s transformation from a rural backwater in the 1970s through its emergence today as one of the top wine regions in the world, the book begins with the winery’s shaky start and takes the reader through the father and son’s ongoing battles against killer bugs, cellar disasters, local politics, changing consumer tastes, and the volatility of nature itself. Doug Shafer tells the story of his own education, as well as Shafer Vineyards’ innovative efforts to be environmentally sustainable, its role in spearheading the designation of a Stags Leap American Viticultural Area, and how the wine industry has changed in the contemporary era of custom-crushing and hobbyist winery investors. 1. Appalachian Galapagos follows the smash success of Scary Rednecks and Other Inbred Horrors with authors Weston Ochse and David Whitman returning us to the world of rednecks, human-skin beer cozies, urban legends come to life, southern mythology, drunkards flying in lawn chairs, contemplations on the nature of god, and the monsters within us all. Galapagos cements its ownership of the genre opening with a grand opus of a novella co-written by both authors, featuring backwoods churches, boat rides, and bigfoots. Fourteen additional stories provide us glorious glances into a world of bug zappers, cheetos, and beer-fueled madness. Grand Master of Horror Edward Lee points out in his introduction that ´´this very successful collection is unlike anything that is being done today´ and ´is perhaps the most successful collection of the year.´´ Contents: IntroductionPreface: Excerpt from a Speech given by Professor Elvis G. From his triumphant debut with Snow Crash to the stunning success of his latest novel, Quicksilver, Neal Stephenson has quickly become the voice of a generation. In this now-classic political thriller, he and fellow author J. Frederick George tell a savagely witty, chillingly topical tale set in the tense moments of the Gulf War. When a foreign exchange student is found murdered at an Iowa University, Deputy Sheriff Clyde Banks finds that his investigation extends far beyond the small college town, all the way to the Middle East. Shady events at the school reveal that a powerful department is using federal grant money for highly dubious research. And what its producing is a very nasty bug. Navigating a plot that leads from his own backyard to Washington, D.C., to the Gulf, where his Army Reservist wife has been called to duty, Banks realizes he may be the only person who can stop the wholesale slaughtering of thousands of Americans. Its a lesson in foreign policy he´ll never forget. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Marc Vietor. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/adbl/002170/bk_adbl_002170_sample.mp3. The character of Jack ´´Flashgun” Casey was first penned by former newspaper and advertising executive, George Harmon Coxe, Jr. in the March 1934 issue of Black Mask, the legendary Pulp Magazine. Casey was a cameraman who took photographs that accompanied reporter’s newspaper stories. His keen eye for detail served him well with solving the crimes he was assigned to photograph. ´´Flashgun Casey” was an instant success with the Black Mask readers and soon made the leap to the silver screen and to radio. Jim Backus (TV’s Thurston Howell the Third) was radio’s first Casey, but was replaced early on by Staats Cotsworth. Casey was aided in his amateur detecting by his fellow reporter Ann Williams (Jan Miner, best known as Madge, the spokeswoman for Palmolive) who, like Casey, worked for The Morning Express. When not at work, they frequented The Blue Note Café, a late night lounge where bartender, Ethelbert, provided both a sounding board and levity for Casey and Ann as they awaited their next call to a crime scene. ´´Casey, Crime Photographer” ran on radio from 1943 until 1955, sponsored for most of its run by Anchor Hocking Glass, and made the transition to TV with Richard Carlyle and later, Darren McGavin in the title role.10-2-47 Miscarriage of Justice10-16-47 The Camera Bug10-23-47 Lady in Distress10-30-47 Great Grandfather’s Rent Receipt11-6-47 The Blonde’s Lipstick11-13-47 Too Many Angels11-20-47 Earned Reward11-27-47 After Turkey, the Bill2/26/48 The Fix3/11/48 Fog3/18/48 Murder in Black and White3/25/48 Blind Justice 1.
